Pre-Exam Sedation Protocol
At our hospital, one of our core values is practicing Fear Free and Low Stress Handling. Our goal is to make every visit a positive experience for your pet while ensuring the safety of your family, your pet, and our veterinary team. To facilitate this goal, your veterinarian may prescribe pre-visit medication to be given before appointments. These medications help reduce fear, anxiety, and stress, allowing us to provide the best possible care.

Our hospital uses three (3) pre-exam sedation categories:
- Pre-Exam Sedation Recommended
- Pre-Exam Sedation Required
- Pre-Exam Sedation Required & In-Office Injectable Sedation Required
If Your Pet's Medication Is Recommended
If your veterinarian has recommended pre-visit medication, we strongly encourage you to administer it before your pet's appointment. Many pets experience a calmer, more positive veterinary visit when these medications are used.
If you have run out of medication, please let us know. We can arrange a refill or discuss the best option for your pet's upcoming visit.
If Your Pet's Medication Is Required
Some pets require pre-visit medication before every appointment to ensure they can be examined safely and comfortably.
Please give the medication exactly as directed before your appointment. If you do not have the medication at home, please contact us before your appointment. We will be happy to help you obtain a refill and reschedule your visit if needed.
If your pet arrives without receiving the required medication(s), we will be unable to safely perform the examination. The appointment will need to be rescheduled, and a late/rescheduling fee may apply.
Pets Requiring Additional Sedation
Some pets benefit from both pre-visit medication at home and a calming injectable medication administered at the hospital. These appointments are scheduled for 1 hour to allow enough time for the medication to take effect and to provide care at a pace that minimizes stress.
Please give the pre-exam medication exactly as directed before your appointment. If you do not have the medication at home, please contact us before your appointment. We will be happy to help you obtain a refill and reschedule your visit if needed.

Because these appointments require additional time, specialized monitoring, and individualized care, they are scheduled as Sedated Office Exams and will involve a higher exam fee (when compared to a standard office visit).
